The experimental weight limit on the A368 is to be
introduced on Monday (4 August).
There will be a 7.5 tonne weight restriction on the A368 from
its junction with the A38 in an easterly direction to just west of
its junction with the B3134 Burrington Coombe.
The alternative route for vehicles over the weight limit is A38,
A4174, A37, A368 and vice versa.
Deputy leader and executive member for strategic planning, Cllr
Elfan Ap Rees, said: "Following lengthy consultation with both the
freight industry, neighbouring councils and local parish councils
we are putting this restriction in place to meet continued concerns
from local residents in the area regarding safety, obstructions and
damage caused by heavy good vehicles using this route as a short
cut.
There will be an environmental benefit to the villages along the
A368 by reducing the volume of heavy traffic using this section of
the road."
"To make sure that unclassified country lanes are not used as
diversion routes the traffic order will include restrictions on
lanes between the A368, A38 and B3130. There is a permit scheme in
operation for local businesses who have premises or deliver just
the other side of the restriction and who have no alternative
route. We are also in discussions with BANES and Somerset County
Council to provide advance warning signs and will write to the
freight partnership telling them about the planned restriction.
"We will be carrying out monitoring during the experiment to
quantify HGV movements and any increases in carbon emissions,"
added Cllr Ap Rees.
Local businesses can apply for a permit to allow them access
through the restriction. The public should therefore not confront
HGV drivers who they think may have breached the restrictions.
Permit applications are being strictly vetted to ensure validity
and the police will be responsible for enforcing the
restriction.
The experiment is expected to be in place for up to 18 months
but will be reviewed at six monthly intervals when decisions will
be made to continue, amend or make it
permanent. |
