There are two different types of taxi licensed by
North Somerset Council.
The most easily recognised is the London-style taxi known as a
Hackney Carriage.
Other Hackney vehicles are recognised by their TAXI roof
signs.
Unlike private hire vehicles Hackney cabs can be hailed or
flagged down in the street.
They can also be found waiting for fares at our official taxi
ranks across the district.
Most Hackney vehicles can carry four passengers but some, such
as people carriers, can carry more.
All Hackney cabs will be wheelchair accessible by the year 2012
and the London-style taxis are already capable of carrying
wheelchair users.
Each Hackney Carriage is fitted with a calibrated meter which
can be seen in the cab of the vehicle.
For journeys with a destination within the North Somerset
Council boundary the cost of the journey is calculated by the
meter.
A table of fares is displayed inside each vehicle.
For journeys with a destination outside the district boundary,
the driver can negotiate the fare with you before the journey
starts.
