More than 27,000 schoolchildren are taken to
school in cars and in buses across North Somerset every
day.
This is due to increasing car ownership and dependency and
general fears over road and public safety for
children.
This has created longer home to school journeys and means fewer
children are walking and cycling to their
classrooms.
School travel planning is an important local transport issue so
we have produced our
Sustainable
School Travel Strategy.
Our priorities include creating safer journeys using sustainable
transport and reducing road congestion. We need to find a balance
between travelling and improving our quality of life.
Free school information packs are available and we offer help
and advice to anyone involved in the home to school journey.
We can help you with a range of initiatives including:
- developing a school travel plan
- providing guidance in dealing with local agencies
- providing guidance in coordinating your working group
- arranging an initial visit to your school
- organising site surveys
- preparing research
- consulting with engineers
- liaising with our education and
road safety departments
- reporting to school governors
- advising on school travel plan documents
You can find out about our projects and activities in our
School Travel Action Newsletter (STAN) - Summer 2008.
