Cycle routes

We run and maintain a growing network of cycle routes in North Somerset

Our network consists of dedicated off-carriageway tracks, paths alongside carriageways (both of which may be shared with pedestrians), and on-carriageway facilities such as cycle lanes. One very popular route is the Strawberry Line Heritage Trail from Yatton to Cheddar. These are linked in many areas by quiet or otherwise reasonably attractive roads.

We are actively working on completing new routes and ‘missing links’ in the network. This includes connections between Weston-super-Mare and Clevedon avoiding the A370, the 'Festival Way' Connect 2 route linking Nailsea and Bristol and we are currently bidding for funding to improve links between Portishead, Portbury Dock, Pill and Bristol.

The best way to plan your journey is with the free North Somerset Cycle Map, available free from  your local library, the Tourist Information Centres, Castlewood in Clevedon, and Somerset House in Weston-super-Mare. This and many other maps are also available for download from Better by Bike, where you can also use the online journey planner. Dedicated routes have signposting and markings on the carriageway.

We have worked closely with organisations such as Sustrans and the national cyclists' organisation, the CTC, to develop this network. You can now enjoy safer and more pleasant journeys to work and school or just enjoy a great day out.

If mountain biking is more your thing then there are some fantastic trails in North Somerset, especially around the new mountain biking centre at Ashton Court and Leigh Woods.

In more urban areas it may be more difficult to avoid busier roads. You can improve your safety and confidence on busier roads through adult cycle training. We currently have funding (through our successful Local Sustainable Travel Fund bid) to provide cycle training to adults living or working on the Weston-super-Mare to Bristol (including Nailsea) and Portishead to Bristol corridors.
