Lock it or lose it!
In one year 615 cycles were reported stolen in North Somerset of
which only 53 were recovered. Most bikes that are stolen are either
left unlocked or poorly secured. Don’t forget to secure bikes in
garden sheds too, which can be targeted.
It’s crucial that when you park your bike you lock it to
something that both fully supports it and is secure. Where possible
use a cycle stand. Lock both the frame and at least one wheel to
the stand. This will help avoid it getting damaged and greatly
reduce the chance of it being stolen. Also remove small parts such
as lights and pumps.
A good rule of thumb is to spend about 10% of the value of your
bike on the lock, so for a £500 bike buy a £50 lock. The best locks
are approved by Sold
Secure and have a Silver or Gold approval level. Most cable
type locks are not as secure as most shackle type ones, but a
length of cable is useful to secure wheels and other
components.
Most at risk are attractive bikes that are left in the same
place every day in situations where there is poor natural
surveillance. In such cases you may be advised to use two locks of
different types – thieves rarely go out equipped to deal with more
than one type of lock. Many cyclists keep an older bike to use in
more vulnerable situations.
To help deter thieves and to aid recovery of stolen cycles you
can Datatag your bike. Avon and Somerset Police have negotiated a
discounted rate (£13.50 instead of £26) for residents of
Weston-super-Mare – call 01932 796 788. If you wish to insure your
bike this will often be most cost effective as part of a household
contents policy.
