We fund and support various bus services across North
Somerset.
The majority of bus services are run on a commercial basis by
local bus companies. However, it is often not profitable to operate
buses at certain times, such as evenings or Sundays, because fewer
people use them.
In order to improve the availability of these services,
particularly for those who have no access to a vehicle, we directly
fund the operation of additional services.
It is often necessary to fund entire routes, particularly in
rural areas, to improve the accessibility of villages in North
Somerset that would otherwise be without a bus service.
For a list of the routes we support visit our
council-supported
bus services page.
We produce bus
timetables for our supported bus services and also commission
community
transport services.
Budget reduction
In light of recent budget reductions, we need to save money on
our supported bus services.
We spend more than £1.1 million a year on supported bus routes
and we have to save 40% of this money. This means we do not have
the choice to carry on as we are, and there will be some changes to
bus services in the coming months.
In July 2011, we consulted you about the bus services we
support. For more information about this consultation, visit the
consultation web page.
