A workplace Travel Plan can help businesses and
organisations of all sizes, in all locations and across all
sectors.
More than 150 organisations are already
developing Travel Plans across the Greater Bristol and North
Somerset areas.
Travel Plan benefits
This is because a workplace Travel Plan can introduce
the following benefits and help your business or
organisation to:
- Aid recruitment and staff retention
- Improve car park management so that those that most require
parking have convenient access to it
- Improve allocation of transport resources and value for
money
- Improve site accessibility for customers,
staff and visitors
- Improve staff health through active commuting
- Increase staff security
- Reduce traffic congestion, pollution and carbon emissions
- Reduce vulnerability to future energy shocks
- Stay a step ahead of the game - Travel Plans are now a planning
requirement under
Planning Policy Guidance 13 (Transport)
Who should be involved?
If you are considering creating a Travel Plan for your
workplace then the following people and organisations need to
be consulted and included in the process in order to make it
successful:
- Local council
- Local public transport operators
- Local residents - for example where parking problems may be
alleviated or could affect local people
- Senior and middle management
- Trade union and other staff representative groups
- User groups - for example bus, cycling or disabled
groups
A successful Travel Plan should have a co-ordinator, typically
someone in human resources (HR) or facilities management, and
a budget for the planned measures. Active ongoing support from
someone in senior management is also essential.
Do your research
Once managerial support has been established you will need to
carry out the following surveys tailored to the employer's and site
needs. We recommend the use of iTRACE to do this. Refer to the
Using
iTRACE page for details.
This research will identify what measures will make the greatest
difference in achieving your Travel Plan aims.
Targets (outcomes) should also be set and the plan monitored to
ensure it is working.
