More than 28,000 children travel to school across
North Somerset every day.
Over 33% of these children travel by car due to choice of
school, an increase in car dependency and general fears
over road and public safety for
children.
This has created longer home to school journeys and means fewer
children are walking and cycling to their
classrooms.
School travel planning is an important local transport
issue so we have produced our
Sustainable Mode of Travel to School Strategy (pdf, Aug10,
1069KB).
Our priorities include creating safer journeys using sustainable
transport and reducing road congestion. We need to find a balance
between travelling and improving our quality of life.
We offer help and advice to anyone involved in the
home to school journey and can help with a range of
initiatives including:
- developing , advising and reviewing school travel plans
- providing guidance in dealing with local agencies
- providing guidance in coordinating your working group
- preparing research and travel surveys
- consulting with engineers
- liaising with our education and
road safety departments
- reporting to school governors
You can find out about our projects and
activities in our School Travel Action Newsletter STAN - Aug/Sept
2010 (pdf, Sept 10, 446KB).
