Portishead High Street FAQs

What work is being done?

We are resurfacing the carriageway on the High Street; making repairs to some of the highway drainage pipes, where they are blocked or damaged; and making repairs to some sections of the path and replacing damaged kerbs.

During the maintenance works we will also be taking the opportunity to improve the pedestrian crossing points, by raising them, as well as changing on-street parking.

When is the work being carried out?

The works are being carried out in two phases, to minimise disruption over Christmas. The first phase was from 25 October-3 December 2010. Phase 2 will run from 10 January to 11 February 2011.

What disruption can be expected?

During Phase 1 we worked between the fork at Bristol Road and the mini-roundabout at the end of Brampton Way. There were traffic lights in place along this stretch for the first four weeks as we carried out the drainage, footway and kerb repairs. Once the repairs were finished we resurfaced the carriageway and this meant we had to close the road for four days.

During Phase 2 we will be doing improvements between the mini-roundabout at Brampton way and the north end of the High Street. This section of road will be closed from 8.30am-4pm while we do the work. Marshals will allow vehicles access to business (for example for deliveries), if it is safe to do so, during these times.

How will I get to my property, or visit the shops when the road is closed?

When we close the road vehicles will only have very limited access to property, and this will be allowed by marshals who will let vehicles through if it is safe. Overnight, from 4pm-8.30am there will be access, but it will not be possible to drive through the entire closed section.

Through traffic will need to follow the signed diversion route.

Also, depending on where the works are being carried out, it may not be possible for vehicles to gain access from one end, and it will be necessary to follow the diversion route to get onto the road from the opposite end.

Although you will not be able to park on the High Street during the work, there is parking nearby and you will be able to walk to the shops.

We will try to make sure all premises can be reached during the work, but the nature of the improvements means it can be very dangerous so we may have to restrict access at times.
