Riding a motorbike gives you a sense of freedom and can be a
cheaper alternative when commuting to and from work.
However, motorcyclists are vulnerable and are over represented
when it comes to casualty statistics on UK roads.
North Somerset attracts a large number
of motorcyclists throughout the year, and with popular
events such as the
Weston Bike Night,
even more riders take to the road.
Here's some advice to help yourself:
- Be seen: An approved white or brightly
coloured helmet that fits securely and using dipped
headlights, (even in daylight) can help you be seen.
- Road position: Take up your road position
in good time before turning right or left, showing others what you
aim to do.
- Lifesaver: Take a glance over your shoulder
before carrying out manoeuvres when you need to know where and
what other drivers are doing.
- Clothing: Jackets, trousers and boots. The
best is CE marked and can protect you from getting hurt if you come
off. It should be fluorescent during the day and reflective at
night.Clothing which also protects you properly from the weather
will not just make you feel more comfortable, it will also allow
you to focus more on your riding. This kit may not be ultra cool
but neither is losing the skin off your arms and legs because
another driver didn't see you.

Anti-skid manhole cover trial
As part of a road safety initiative we are trialling a new
type of anti-skid manhole cover which has the potential to
reduce/eliminate slippery iron manhole covers in the road which
motorcyclists and cyclists often find in their riding line. For
further information on the benefits of this product please visit
Structural
Science
A benefit is that this type of cover has no scrap value,
making them less likely to be stolen. It is estimated that in the
last year alone around 45 metal covers were stolen in North
Somerset equating to around £20,000 in replacement costs (including
traffic management).
To see more information in relation to scrap metal thefts
please see
Avon & Somerset Police
It is hoped that in the future other locations with differing
road conditions can also be trialled within North Somerset.
Additional information on the issues that iron manhole covers
can cause for motorcyclists can be found at
www.getagripuk.org which
is a campaign currently being run by the motorcycle action
group.
