The scheme introduces young children to the
correct road safety skills to enable them to be safe independent
pedestrians.
Kerbcraft teaches three main skills:
- Finding safe places to cross
- Crossing safely at parked cars
- Crossing safely near junctions
The scheme has been researched and developed by psychologists at
Strathclyde University and
proved extremely popular and successful so has now been extended to
other areas across the country.
Kerbcraft is aimed at children between five and seven years of age
and uses trained volunteers to take the children out of the
classroom and on the streets surrounding their own school.
Each skill is practised at several locations surrounding the school
and takes place over a period of four to six weeks.
The trained volunteers take the children out in groups of no
more than three.
The scheme relies on volunteers, teachers and the project staff all
working together to improve child safety.
All volunteers will receive full training from a Kerbcraft
Co-ordinator and ongoing support. |
