We want to establish a continuous footpath along
the length of North Somerset coast called the Tidal
Trail.
The path would allow walkers to explore the currently
hidden shoreline of the Severn Estuary between Clevedon and
Weston-super-Mare.
The coast between South Clevedon and Sand Bay in Weston has very
few public rights of way and the trail would provide
access to a remote seascape and extensive views.
The existing sea wall is a short stroll from each town and
offers a potential accessible route for walkers and disabled
users and would have a minimum impact on
farmers.
There are also proposals to make the route between the
Congresbury Yeo and Old Bridge River at Tutshill Ear Sluice,
between Kingston Seymour and Wick St Lawrence, accessible to
cyclists and horseriders.
We also have to be aware of the
impact the route could have on the estuary's
birdlife as the area is a designated Special Protection Area
(SPA).
However, it also important for people to be able to appreciate
the environment and its wildlife.
Eventually, the intention is to stretch the trail along the
coast from Pill to the River Axe.
The proposed route crosses private land so we commissioned
a report to look at creating a public right of
way which was open for public consultation until 30 September
2006.
Copies of the full report can be viewed at our
libraries or
Somerset
House in Weston with further information available through
our Tidal Trail leaflet.
