A major upgrade to traffic lights at a busy junction in
Weston-super-Mare gets under way at the end of this
month.
The existing traffic signals at the Boulevard junction with
Alfred St and Albert Quadrant will be replaced with new extra low
voltage (ELV) with the lights, controllers and cabling operating at
a dramatically reduced voltage. For example, the controller
will work on 48 volts compared with the 230 volts of a
normal controller. This will lead to considerable energy and carbon
reduction of up to 50% and be far safer if the system is damaged by
any vehicle colliding with it.
ELV is also safer to install than higher-voltage models. The
traffic signals will be fitted with LED lamps helping to reduce
annual maintenance costs and will be more visible to drivers in
bright, sunny conditions.
The cost of the project will be £40,000 and contractor Siemens
Mobility Traffic Solutions are carrying out the work on our
behalf..
Work is due to start on Monday 30 January and will last
approximately three weeks.
Letters have been sent to local people and businesses to let
them know what is happening. Temporary traffic lights will be used
during off peak hours from 9.30am to 3.30pm and while there may be
some delays these should be minimal and road users are asked to be
patient while the work is carried out.
