Highway building and construction

We issue the licences required to place construction and building items alongside the public highway in North Somerset.

This includes items such as skips, scaffolding, hoardings and building materials like sand bags stored on the road.

You require a licence for all these items before you can put or leave them by the highway.

We inspect prospective sites before we grant approval to ensure they conform with the Highways Act.

We also require evidence of your public liability insurance up to the value of £5m.

To apply for your licence download and fill in our Skip licence, Scaffolding licence or Building materials licence application forms.

Building material, hoarding and skip licences all costs £22 each. Scaffolding licences costs £48.

When we have received your completed form we will be in touch after three working days.

Once permission has been granted the conditions attached to the licence must be complied with at all times. These conditions are included in the application form

Action will be taken to remove unsafe scaffolding, illegally positioned skips and dumped builders materials on the road. Our service does not cover private land.
