There are community grit bins at key locations across
North Somerset which hold salt for use on public roads and
pavements.
Parish and town councils pay to have the bins installed at spots
where they think they are needed, that we cannot get to as part of
the main
salting routes programme.
This includes on steep hills or in areas that are at risk of
repeated freezing, such as under trees or in shade.
Anyone can use the salt in the bins, as long as it is for public
areas.
It is illegal to use the salt on your own land, such as
driveways or steps. If you are caught you could be prosecuted for
stealing.
Make sure you use a shovel or a spade to get the salt out of the
bin as it is very corrosive and could cause damage to your hands if
you picked it up.
We keep the grit bins, which can each hold around half a tonne
of salt, topped up.
If you would like to request a bin in your area contact your
town
or parish council.
If you are worried about what you can do to help clear snow in
your area visit the
Directgov
website for advice.
If you would like to report the fact that salt is running low or
a bin is empty visit our council connect
report a road salting or grit bin problem page.
