Parts of North Somerset has its street lights
turned off between midnight and 5am in the winter (GMT) and 1am and
dawn in the summer (BST).
This does not include any areas where road safety or
crime is an issue, or parts of town centres where there is a lot of
activity or a strong night time economy, anywhere there is CCTV,
where there are sheltered houses or other residences for vulnerable
people, or in areas where emergency services are based, for example
hospitals, police, ambulance or fire stations.
To find out which lights are switched off at night, which are
dimmed and which are not affected see our
interactive
map. This shows all the lights which are already switched off
at night and all those which will be by December 2012.

Switching off lights at night saves us money. More than £300,000
will be saved annually following the completion of part-night
street lighting. And the cost of electricity is very likely to rise
in the coming years. Even if our price went up by 1p a unit, with
the amount we use this could see our bill going up more than
£50,000 a year.
Switching off lights during quiet times at night was carefully
considered and investigated before we decided to do it across
the district.
The plans were drawn up to make sure there is no impact on
safety or crime, and trials carried out in 2007 and 2010 made sure
there would be no problems.
