Personal injury

We have a duty to ensure any hazards on roads or pavements within North Somerset are made safe as soon as possible.

Any potential threats to public safety on the highway need to be removed as they could cause injury to pedestrians and road users or damage property.

Hazards can result from accidents, damage or vandalism with the following examples considered to be risks:

  • Missing drain or inspection covers
  • Protruding pedestrian guard railings or fencing
  • Toppled concrete and traffic bollards, sign posts, lamp columns and lanterns
  • Damaged bridge parapets
  • Oil spillages
  • Broken or loose hanging traffic signal lights and sign plates

You should report any of these, or similar hazards, to us immediately.

To report a hazard contact our Streets and Open Spaces service on 01934 888 802 between 8.45am and 5pm Monday to Thursday and between 8.45am and 5pm on Friday.

Outside of these hours contact our out of hours emergency line on 01934 662 669.

When reporting a hazard you should include the following information to help us deal with the problem as quickly as possible:

  • Area, street name and location on the street of the hazard
  • Description of the hazard
  • Your name and a contact number
  • Date and time of the damage - if known
  • Details of person or vehicle registration responsible for the damage - if known
  • Whether the police attended the scene

If the damage is clearly not our responsibility we will contact the person or organisation responsible and request they make the hazard safe.

If they are unable to do this or responsibility cannot be established we will make the hazard safe and recover the costs.
