This project helped raise the profile of
pavement repair across North Somerset.
This followed consultation with local people and our
Senior Citizen's Forum who identified it as an important issue
affecting older people.
Research has shown that 5.4m older people across the UK
avoid routes which may have faulty or damaged pavements in order to
avoid falling.
Falling can result in distress, injury and loss of
confidence and independence for many older people.
For further information on falls prevention please visit the
Help the Aged website.
POPP money was invested in areas where people had reported
a number of falls as a result of hazardous surfaces.
The work to repair the areas was carried out by North
Somerset Council's Highways Department to help avoid
further incidents and compensation payments.
Whilst the project was unable to secure reinvestment, as a
result of reducing claims it provided the opportunity to work
closely with older people to address some of their concerns around
pavement repair through the creation of the Pavement Repair Card.
This encourages people to alert North Somerset Council of pavements
for repair which they consider to be hazardous.
