The Approved Mental Health Professional service

The Approved Mental Health Professional service undertakes assessments under the Mental health Act 1983.
 
Our team currently comprises of social workers with specific training and expertise in relation to mental health law. They undertake assessments of people who are likely to require admission to hospital, sometimes under compulsion.
 
We take referrals usually from mental health teams, the police, GPs and sometimes from relatives and carers. Nearest Relatives have specific duties and powers under the Act. The Mental Health Act 2007, which came into force on November 3rd 2008, has made small but significant changes to the 1983 Act. Introducing new professional roles and changes the definition and criteria of mental disorder.
