The Government has set the following national
targets for schools to meet through the extended schools
agenda:
- September 2008 - Access to childcare and a range of activities
from 8am until 6pm at or through 50% of primary schools and 30% of
secondary schools open 8am until 6pm
- September 2010 - Access to childcare at or through all primary
schools with all secondary schools open 8am until 6pm
- All three and four year olds receiving 15 hours of childcare
for 38 weeks per year
We have made substantial progress towards achieving these
targets by August 2008 by:
- Building on extended services which are already being offered
in many of our schools
- Strengthening strategic partnerships with other agencies
- Working with schools and clusters to help develop their own
provision and make the most of those partnerships
We are supporting all schools to develop extended services by
creating a network of extended schools co-ordinators for each
school cluster.
We are also focussing on priority areas including:
- Increasing the range of extended services for disadvantaged
children and young people - particularly those with disabilities
and looked after children through increased after-school, holiday
club and other provision
- Addressing the supply, quality and affordability of childcare
during term-time and holidays particularly in disadvantaged
areas
- Improving access to healthy activities by linking with the
Healthy Schools programme and our Sports Development
service
