We run the Family Link Scheme to arrange short breaks
for disabled children and young people in North
Somerset.
Short breaks offer families a break for overnight stays, regular
weekends and some daycare. The care takes place in the Family Link
Carer's home and offers the child the opportunity to develop
independence and social skills.
The scheme accepts children aged 0-18 years but the majority of
children using the service are between 5 and 16 years.
If you are a parent and require further information about the
scheme please download our
information for parents leaflet.
The majority of children using the scheme have a learning
disability or autism and some may also have a mild physical
disability and/or communication difficulties.
We recruit local people to provide care when families most need
it, i.e. overnight, weekends and daycare, particularly during
school holidays.
Anyone who has experience or a genuine interest in caring for
children can apply, no special qualifications are required. However
patience and understanding obviously help.
If you have some relevant work or voluntary experience please
let us know.
We have a minimum age of 21 years for carers but there is no
upper age limit provided you are fit and healthy.
Training and regular support is provided and will continue once
you are approved by North Somerset Foster Panel. Travel and
childcare costs incurred may be reimbursed.
You can contact us anytime you need help, advice or just a chat
about how things are going.
