Children who need adopting come from a range of
social backgrounds, races, cultures, and
religions.
Many have no families and had a difficult start in life and are
currently in foster care.
They may have emotional, behavioural or developmental problems
as a result of their experiences in their earlier lives.
They may have suffered physical and sexual abuse, neglect or
other forms of ill treatment and some may have medical problems,
physical or learning difficulties.
Some children are placed for adoption with the consent and
co-operation of their parents who may be very actively involved in
planning the adoption.
They may wish to continue to remain in contact with the child
and their new family adopters.
This is so the child can understand their history and form a
sense of identity and self-esteem.
Other children are placed for adoption as a result of a court's
decision - possibly against their parents' wishes.
