Assessment and checks

If you are interested in adoption, following an initial telephone conversation with us we will invite you to an open evening and/or arrange for a social worker to interview you.

We will then also invite you to attend an adoption preparation course, which is normally held over three or four days.

Prior to attending this course, we will ask you to submit a formal application.

We are legally required to carry out various checks that include police, health and at least three personal referees. These will contribute to the contents of a Prospective Adopter's Report (PAR).

In order to complete the PAR a series of meetings between yourself and a social worker will also be required in order to give you more information about adoption and to compile a comprehensive profile of your family's strengths, experience and understanding of adoption.

We will require you to pay for a medical examination as we are looking for families with good general health. However, having certain health problems will not necessarily count against you so please contact us on 01275 888 236 if you would like to discuss this in confidence. The Panel's decision making will be informed by the views of our Panel Medical Advisor.

The completed PAR will be presented to our Adoption Panel who will then make a recommendation regarding your approval.
