If you are interested in adoption then you will
have to undergo an assessment and checks before any decision is
taken on you adopting a child.
If you have registered an interest in adoption your initial
enquiry will be followed up by an interview with one of our social
workers.
You will also be invited to attend an information evening and if
you wish to proceed you will be required to attend our adoption
preparation course.
Following this course and if you would like to pursue your
enquiry and a decision has been made to take up your application we
will contact you to arrange a series of visits to your home.
These visits will give you more information about adoption and
allow us to discuss adoption issues with you in detail so you can
be sure it is right for you as a family.
In addition, we need to know you well enough to be sure you can
meet the needs of any child we place with you.
We are also legally required to carry out various checks in the
form of police, health and personal references.
The process is confidential and you should not be deterred if
you have had difficulties in the past.
We are interested in learning of people's strengths and whether
they could make good parents not in judging them by previous
behaviour.
You will also need to pay for a medical examination as we are
looking for families with good general health but this will not
necessarily prevent us from accepting your application if you have
some health problems.
