Beyond the call of duty

Date: 12/01/2010

Vulnerable residents who are running low on essential groceries have been receiving a personal home delivery service during the extreme conditions thanks to dedicated council staff.

Due to the icy conditions some residents, who have no family support, have been unable to restock their cupboards.

The prolonged wintry weather prompted the council's Care Connect and Carelink services to identify residents who may need extra help and they were offered a basic provisions service.

Shopping has been delivered to seven residents in Long Ashton, Nailsea, Clevedon, Cleeve and Weston-super-Mare.

During the snowy conditions, the council has also maintained its meals on wheels service to around 400 residents with people either receiving hot meals or a supply of frozen ready meals.

The council would like to recognise the fantastic effort of all domiciliary care staff that have maintained continuity of care to 1,400 vulnerable service users in their homes throughout the period.

Cllr Nigel Ashton, the Leader of North Somerset Council said he wanted to thank all council staff for going the extra mile during the snow.

"I would like to thank all our staff for their efforts during the recent winter conditions. Their actions show a true commitment to providing the best possible service to our residents even if it is in their own time.

"The staff who have spent part of their weekend ensuring that our vulnerable residents have food and are warm are an excellent example of the "can do" attitude that exists within the council."
