Second adult rebate

If you are ineligible for council tax benefit you may able to claim something called second adult rebate.

This benefit is based on the income and circumstances of other adults, not including your partner, who live in your household.

To qualify the non-dependents must be over 18 and not liable for rent or council tax.

It is generally awarded if your income is too high to claim normal council tax benefit and the others in your household have a low income.

For example, they are on income support.

Or if you are not entitled to a 25% single person council tax discount because other adults live in your home.

The amount of rebate you receive depends upon their income but you will not receive anything if they earn more than £171 per week.

Depending on their income you will receive the following discount off your council tax bill:

  • If they are on income support or jobseekers allowance - 25%
  • If they earn less than £131 per week - 15%
  • If they earn more than £131 per week but less than £169.99 per week - 7.5%

If you are entitled to both council tax benefit and second adult rebate we will award you the higher of the two.

To apply pick up a form from the Town Hall in Weston-super-Mare or contact us on 01934 888 136.

You will need to provide proof of the second adult's income, your national insurance number and two forms of ID.
