A non-dependent is someone over the age of 18 who
normally lives with you in your home.
They include your adult children, relatives or friends and an
amount may be taken out of your benefit for each one who lives in
your household.
This amount depends on your own and their circumstances but nothing
will be taken if you or your partner are:
- Receiving attendance allowance
- Receiving the care part of disability living allowance
- Registered blind
- Receiving servere disablement allowance
Any money you receive from non-dependents for their keep is not
counted in your income.
Instead, a fixed deduction is made from your benefit entitlement
based on their gross weekly income for renumerative work of 16
hours or more per week.
However, non-dependents do not include any of the following
individuals or groups:
- Your partner
- A child you receive child benefit for
- Anyone under 18
- Anyone in full-time education
- Anyone on a youth training scheme
- Anyone on income support, jobseekers allowance or housing
benefit
- Boarders, sub-tenants and joint tenants
- Anyone who normally lives elsewhere
The following deductions are made from the following benefits
for non-dependents working and earning the following amounts:
