If your social security benefits stop you may
still be able to claim housing or council tax benefit for a limited
period.
Your income support or jobseekers allowance may cease if you or
your partner start a new job or your working hours increase to 16
or more per week.
However, you may still be entitled to claim up to an extra four
weeks of benefit no matter how much you earn through an extended
payment, also known as a benefit run on.
This payment can be made even if you move to start work but the
amount may be different depending on where you move to.
To be eligible to make an extended payment claim the following
conditions must apply:
- Your job must be expected to last five weeks or
longer
- You must be under 60 when you make the claim
- You must have been receiving a qualifying benefit for at least
26 weeks before you start work
- You must have a continuing rent or council tax liability and
have a liability immediately prior to your qualifying benefit
ceasing.
To make you claim you must advise ourselves, the
Department for Work and Pensions
or the Employment
Service of you or your partner's change in circumstances within
four weeks of the date of change.
You may still qualify for benefit after the extended payment period
has finished and inorder to avoid any loss of benefit you must
submit a new claim form to us within 28 days of your income support
or jobseekers allowance ceasing.
