Overpayments

If we pay you too much benefit we will send you a letter confirming the overpayment.

The letter will explain why we paid you too much benefit and how much the overpayment is for.

If your overpayment is due to us having incorrect details about your circumstances we will need you to provide us with the correct information so we can adjust your overpayment accordingly.

We will also tell you whether you will have to pay back the overpaid amount and how you can appeal if you disagree with our decision.

In most cases concerning council tax benefit we will send you a revised bill and you will usually have to pay more council tax to pay back the overpayment.

In cases concerning housing benefit we can recover what you owe by making reductions to your ongoing benefit payments.

If we have underpaid your benefit we can also use this to reduce the amount you owe.

However, if you are no longer entitled to benefit we will send you an invoice for the outstanding amount and you can can make payments by cash, cheque or debit card at the Town Hall in Weston-super-Mare or any local housing office.

You should make cheques payable to North Somerset Council and quote your claim number.

Alternatively if you wish to pay by standing order quote for the following account details:

Sort code: 08-90-02
Account number: 61106011

In cases concerning housing benefit overpayment to landlords we will again send you an invoice and the same repayment options and details will apply.

However, we can also recover these overpayments from any ongoing benefit being paid to your other tenants.
