Family Link Scheme

We run the Family Link Scheme to arrange short breaks for disabled children and young people in North Somerset.

The scheme was judged by an independent inspection as "excellent" with further information available on our Family Link Scheme inspection and report page.

This means giving a family a much-needed break for anything from a few hours to an overnight stay or an occasional weekend.

This takes place in the Family Link carer's home and we currently have 13 approved carers offering care to 18 children up to 18 years of age.

However, the majority of children using the service are between three and 15 years.

If you are a parent and require further information about the scheme please download our Information for parents leaflet.

The range of disability catered for is very wide and can include sight, hearing and speech impairments and physical or learning disabilities.

We recruit local people to provide overnight and weekend care and offer them ongoing training and support.

Anyone who has experience or a genuine interest in caring for people can volunteer with no special qualifications required.

However, patience and understanding obviously help.

If you have some relevant working or voluntary experience please let us know.

We have a minimum age of 21 for carers but there is no upper age limit provided you are fit and healthy.

Training involves attending several meetings and is held within North Somerset and travel and childcare costs may be reimbursed.

Support will continue after training by regular visits. You can also contact us anytime you need help, advice or just a chat about how things are going.
