Rubbish or Resource? consultation

After a public consultation earlier this year we are developing a new Waste Strategy for North Somerset which aims to improve how we manage future waste and recycling.

Your views will contribute to the Development Plan documents and the Waste Strategy which will be published in 2008.

More than a thousand residents took part in the survey. Some of the issues raised by residents include:

  • encourage increased recycling
  • reduce the amount of rubbish taken to landfill
  • reduce the total amount of waste
  • the impact of waste on the environment.

The consultation also asked you to think about an alternative to landfill and how new waste facilities sites should be selected.

Although the consultation focused on household waste many people believed that businesses and residents alike should be equally encouraged to reduce waste and re-use items.

There was a high number of requests for more information on climate change and on the impact of carbon emissions on the environment. More work is being done to evaluate the environmental impact of waste and treatment solutions.

Other key issues that have come from the consultation report will be fed into the new Waste Strategy and the Development Plan:

  • the need to reduce the distance that waste is transported
  • many people favoured a network of smaller localised facilities dispersed across the district
  • the effect of excessive carbon dioxide levels on the environment.

There will be another public consultation on the new joint Development Plan Document in 2008. This report will give some indication of potential locations for waste facilities to handle household as well as commercial and industrial waste.
