We maintain closed churchyards across North
Somerset.
A closed churchyard is one that is no longer available for burials
except to persons who have purchased a plot.
We take over the grounds maintenance, tree works for
safety reasons and minor repairs to boundary walls and path
surfaces.
As a result we will cut grass from April to October
on a three-weekly cycle but we leave arisings in situ.
We will also trim shrubs and hedges once a year
and tidy up and remove brambles where necessary.
Grave tops are the responsibility of the grave owner but we will
try to keep tidy unattended graves during the winter where
resources allow.
However, we do not repair church buildings or water leaks - these
are the responsibility of the church.
We are responsible for health and safety memorial inspections on
a five-year rolling programme covering the 21 closed churchyards
across the district.
