Weston seafront enhancements

The seafront enhancement project in Weston-super-Mare will see the substantial upgrading of the town's promenade and sea wall.

This will provide a major boost to the tourism trade and economic prosperity of the area as well as protecting 4,500 properties from flooding from the sea.

The current sea defences are not adequate and we are working on a scheme to protect the town as well as improve the quality of the promenade for businesses, residents and visitors.

The seafront enhancements will be carried out in three phases. The first phase, at Marine Lake, has been completed and work is now taking place on the second phase on the seafront. The third phase will begin in September. The overall project will completed in 2010.

£29 million will be invested in improving Weston's sea defences and upgrading the seafront. Funding has largely come from Defra's Flood Defence Grant in Aid.

There is also £1.2 million from the South West Regional Development Agency's Civic Pride initiative, £250,000 from the Wessex Regional Flood Defence Committee and £150,000 from the Joint Local Transport Plan.

A number of other options have been consulted on over the last couple of years before the chosen scheme was agreed on.

These pages also outline who's involved in the project and background information about Weston seafront's story. Pages will be updated as the project continues.
