Date: 04 Jul 2008

Weston-super-Mare is currently hosting its biggest and most spectacular sand sculpture festival on the beach until 31 August.

The opening weekend (12, 13 July) saw the festival attract an incredible 7500 visitors.

Local, national and international media have also visited this unique event, with reports reaching as far afield as Israel and China.

The team of 14 international sand sculptors spent two weeks turning 360 tons of Weston sand into an amazing work of art.

You can keep up to date on their progress on the event website - www.westonsandsculpture.co.uk. The artists will be writing regular blogs on the site during their stay.

The site will has a special section for kids to have a go at creating their own sculptures with a little help from North Somerset Play Forum.

"We are very lucky to be hosting this event yet again, which is a reflection of the superb sandcastle building qualities of Weston beach of course," said Cllr Elfan Ap Rees, Deputy Leader.

The event has been generously sponsored and supported by Wookey Hole, Weston Town Council, The Grand Pier, Avon Fire and Rescue and Birse, the contractors currently working on the seafront enhancement scheme.

"Wookey Hole is proud to be associated with this unique event, which we have been involved with since its beginning," said Daniel Medley, Wookey Hole Manager.

"The sculptors' work is amazing and we hope to be involved in the future success of this event."
