200 years of tourism

Weston-super-Mare celebrated 200 years as a tourism destination in 2010.

Weston-super-Mare’s first hotel, The Royal Hotel, opened its doors to visitors in May 1810. Visitors came from Bath and Bristol to sea-bathe and take the air, and tourism was born in what had been a small fishing village on the Bristol Channel.

Throughout the 20th Century Weston was a popular seaside resort for family holidays, drawing generations of loyal visitors to its glorious sandy beaches.

Take a look at our interesting facts about Weston for more historical information about the town.

2010 saw the dawn of a new era for tourism in the town. Not only did we look back over 200 years of tourism we also looked forward. The new Grand Pier opened, and the seafront promenade was completely transformed with new seating, lighting and surfacing, public artworks and a smart new Pier Square.
