Children talk - libraries listen

Date: 26/01/2011

The results of a survey to find out what children and young people under the age of 16 think about their local library service have been published.

Our library service conducted the Public Library User Survey (PLUS) last October. The main results are:

  • 99% of children completing the survey thought the library was a friendly place
  • 98% thought it was safe
  • 97% said it was a place they wanted to go to
  • 86% said, overall, the library they visited was good
  • 84% said their reason for visiting the library was to borrow books or other items
  • 60% said using the library had helped them to read better
  • 57% said it helped them to learn and find things out
  • 38% said it helped them do better at school.

"Thank you to the 1,700 children and parents or carers who took part in the survey," said Cllr Felicity Baker, executive member responsible for libraries.

"The results and comments will help improve our library services for children and young people. Already, more of certain books and other materials have been ordered as a result of comments made in the survey."
