North Somerset libraries’ Space Hop Summer Reading
Challenge has been the most successful yet.
Nearly 4,700 children have started the challenge so far. Those
aged four to 12 were asked to read at least six books over the
summer in the annual Summer Reading Challenge. They have
responded magnificently and created a new record for the number of
starters.
Cllr Felicity Baker, executive member responsible for library
services said that the challenge was continuing so there is plenty
of time for children to finish.
"We don’t want children to forget about Space Hop now they are
going back to school. Anyone who still has to finish reading
their six books to complete Space Hop can come to their local
library until the weekend of 18 and 19 September to finish the
challenge and receive their certificate and medal. Every child
completing the challenge can also be entered into a draw to meet
children’s author Julie Sykes at a celebration event in Portishead
in October.
"These challenges are a fantastic way of encouraging children to
discover the wonderful world of reading!"
Library staff are hoping that the numbers of children finishing the
challenge will also show an increase over previous years and with a
record numbers of starters the signs are good for another
record-breaking summer.
