Healthy minds and bodies

Date: 21/07/2010

Backwell residents will soon be able to book a swim and loan the latest best seller when improvements are made to the library service in the village.

The existing Backwell Library building will close on Saturday (24 July) 2010 and a new Library access point will open at Backwell Leisure Centre on Monday, 2 August 2010.

The library access point will be open Monday to Thursday from 7am to 10pm, Friday 7am to 9pm, and Saturday and Sunday 8am to 8pm.

Customers will be able to browse a selection of the most recent fiction bestsellers, and non-fiction focusing on healthy lifestyles. A public access computer with internet access and office software will be available, together with information on council services.

Locating library services at the centre in partnership with Parkwood Community Leisure will mean that new people will be attracted to the site and given the opportunity to become more active - encouraging healthy bodies as well as healthy minds.

The centre is currently being modified to allow for the library access point to be incorporated into the current building.  This includes a new reception desk to help manage the services that are to be offered.  Parkwood Community Leisure and North Somerset Council are also re-opening the cafĂ© at Backwell Leisure Centre to offer hot drinks, panninis, pancakes and cakes to supplement the existing services offered.

Cllr Felicity Baker, executive member with responsibility for libraries said the new access point would provide a convenient point for people to collect books.

"Backwell library is currently only open for 12 hours a week and many working people do not get the chance to make the most of the service. By providing a library access point in the leisure centre, people can access books at a time that is convenient to them as well as picking up other useful information about the council's services.

"We also hope that new members, who have not visited a library before, will join the service."

The mobile library will also be making a weekly visit to Backwell Leisure Centre on Mondays from 2pm to 5pm, offering a wider range of library stock and services.
