Sand sculptors have been digging in on Weston beach as
they work on this year's Sand Sculpture Festival.
It will have taken the 13 sculptors 15 days and 400 tonnes of
sand to create their masterpieces which open to the public this
Saturday (4 July).
All of the sculptors have returned to Weston after being
involved in creating last year's sculptures of the seven
continents.
"We're looking forward to this year's festival, we get a great
reception from people visiting the event," said Alec Messchaert,
Project Manager, World Sand Sculpting Academy. "Over the past five
years we have built a great relationship with the events team at
North Somerset Council and with many people in the town and look
forward to returning each year."
This year's event has been made possible by the generous
sponsorship of Wookey Hole Caves and World Tourist Attractions.
"Wookey Hole are delighted to be supporting the Sand Sculptures
at Weston-Super-Mare once again this year. As in previous years it
has proven to be a great success and benefit to Weston and the
surrounding area and we would like to wish Weston the same good
fortune for this year" said Daniel Medley, General Manager, Wookey
Hole Caves.
"As an important part of Weston-super-Mare's summer season, The
Wheel of Weston and the team at WTA, are proud to support the Sand
Sculpture Festival for the very first time. We would like to wish
all the sculptors the best of luck and are looking forward to the
creation of some truly unique works of art, maybe one will even
look like the wheel!" said Carmine Perretta, Marketing
Co-ordinator, World Tourist Attractions.
Cllr Felicity Baker, executive member with responsibility for
leisure and tourism, said: "It will be really interesting to see
how the sculptures develop and to see the theme revealed!
"The success of last year's event is not in doubt - over 42,000
people visited and there was media interest from around the
world.
"Thank you to sponsors who are making this year's event
possible."
The festival will be open from Saturday 4 July to Sunday 6
September.
