DVD age classification

Anyone hiring DVDs from our libraries must be of a suitable age for the film they have chosen.

The British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) classifies films and DVDs using an age rating scheme. We will ask you to prove your age if we believe you are younger than the age rating on the DVD you have chosen.

The categories of the classification scheme are:

E         Exempt.  Usually factual DVDs, music, educational, or sport.

U         Universal.  Suitable for all.

PG      Parental Guidance. General viewing, but some scenes may be unsuitable for young children.

12       Suitable for 12 years and over. No one younger than 12 may rent a 12 rated DVD. Responsibility for allowing under 12s to view lies with the accompanying or supervising adult.

15        Suitable for 15 years and over. No one younger than 15 may rent a 15 rated DVD.

18        Suitable only for adults. No one younger than 18 may rent an 18 rated DVD.

More information on the classification scheme is available from the BBFC.
