Dictionary of National Biography

Explore the lives of people who have shaped all aspects of British history using Oxford Dictionary of National Biography.

 

When you access the service from home you need to enter your library card number. Please add NSC at the beginning of your 10 digit library card number.

 

Enter a competition ( £50 of books or an iPod shuffle).

 

Oxford Dictionary of National Biography (DNB) includes: 

  • Biographies of 56,000 people who shaped the history of the British Isles and beyond
  • 2,400 years of history, from the earliest times to the year 2004
  • People from the 4th-century BC Greek explorer Pytheas to Princess Diana

You can search for one biography or explore by theme including: 

  • Saints
  • UK Prime ministers
  • Governors-general and viceroys of India
  • Monarchs of England
  • Musical chart-toppers
  • Poets laureate
  • Oscar winners
  • Nobel prize winners
  • Olympic title holders

 

 

You will need to be a member of the library to use this service at home.
