Nineteenth Century Newspapers

Explore over 2 million pages of 19th Century British Library Newspapers. This is a great resource for family historians and anyone interested in history.

Searchable facsimiles of  70 influential national and regional papers with adverts, notices for births, deaths and marriages, and other news of the time including:

  • Bristol Mercury (1819-1900)
  • Trewman's Exeter Flying Post (1800-1900)
  • Western Mail (1869-1900)
  • Illustrated Police News (1867-1900)

You need to be a member of the library to use this service from home.

When you access the website from home you need to enter your library card number.

If you don't have internet access at home come and use our computers in your local library.

North Somerset Studies library has microfilm of local nineteenth century newspapers for Weston and Clevedon.

You can also access The Times newspaper from 1785 to 1982 using subscription to the digital archive.  Or recent national and local newspaper archives from 1992 up to the present day using UK Newsstand

Our libraries also have copies of printed Newspapers.
