Family history resources

We have resources to help you trace your family tree locally and world wide.

Your local library has:

  • Ancestry - free online access to UK census 1841-1901 data and United States resources
  • 19th Century Newspapers - free online access to 70 national and regional papers from 1800-1900
  • access to other family history resources recommended on  cyberLibrary
  • books on genealogy - see our catalogue

Our local history collections at Clevedon, NailseaPortishead and Weston's North Somerset Studies library include local parish records on microfiche and local census returns on fiche. Some libraries have a regular archivist visit from the Somerset Heritage Centre.

Weston Library has a large family history collection to help you in your research, including: 

  • births marriages and deaths (BMD) index on microfiche for 1837-1901. Libraries in Somerset and Bristol have microfiche from 1901 onwards. There is also an online version on FreeBMD
  • International Genealogical Index (IGI) of parish registers (Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter Day Saints) on microfiche. There is also an online version on Familysearch
  • war records including CD-ROMs listing soldiers who died in the two World Wars.

If your family is local then the  North Somerset Studies library has:

  • indexes to censuses, Weston cemetery, quarter sessions 1607-1667, Parish registers
  • family trees and other indexes by local historian Brian Austin 
  • Chew Magna information bequeathed by Frederick A Wood
  • electoral rolls for Weston
  • land tax records on microfiche
  • newspapers on microfilm and cuttings
  • street directories 1887-1974 for Weston, 1840-1939 for Somerset
  • telephone directories.
