Walking is the most natural way to get active as soon as
you leave your doorstep.
It is an accessible, safe, and inexpensive activity which you
can start with a low fitness level and build up gradually.
Walking will improve your health. For example, a brisk 45 minute
walk can burn off around 300 calories.
There are lots of ways to get walking. You could join one of
our health
walks. If you really enjoy taking part you could become
a health walk
leader. Or you could
join a walking group (pdf, Jan 12, 45KB)
in North Somerset. These walks are usually more challenging than
our health walks.
The
Ranger Service also provides a guided walks programme
throughout the year for you to discover the local area.
You can also
use public rights of way as
part of your planned walks.
The Walk to
School project asks parents, pupils and teachers to think
about their journey to and from school. You could check if your
school has a walking bus.
We also publish a local walk in every issue of our monthly
magazine North Somerset Life. The walks vary
in length and difficulty. For more information visit our
