The Walking for Health (pdf, Jul 11, 146KB)
scheme in North Somerset is part of a national
initiative supported by Natural England.
The walks are led by trained volunteers and last between 30
minutes and an hour and a half. They are the ideal first step
for anyone wanting to become active or for people with health
conditions.
Six groups are currently running in North Somerset, covering
Clevedon, Nailsea, Portishead, Weston-super-Mare, Winscombe and
Yatton.
For the latest programme of walks in North
Somerset download the Winter edition of the
Rock n Stroll
(pdf, Dec 11, 297KB) newsletter.
The walks are free and a great way to socialise, have fun and
build up fitness, so why not come along and see for
yourself?
For information on meeting places use our
Interactive
map.
On all walks it is advisable to wear suitable clothing and
footwear for all weather conditions as some walks will be muddy and
slippery. Dogs are not allowed on the health walks.
We have also marked out a series of one mile walks in and around
Weston-super-Mare as part of the
Walk4Life Mile project. These are in parks and open
spaces including Ashcombe and Clarence parks, Locking Castle and
Jubilee Park. For the detailed routes download our
One Mile Walks (pdf, Feb 11, 790KB)
leaflet.
We will also be marking out routes in Clevedon and
Portishead.
If you are a keen walker and would like to help others get their
walking shoes on, then leading a health walk could be for you.
The one day health walk leader workshop gives you the skills you
need to support a current health walk or start a new one in your
area. New leaders mean that more walks can be started in new
locations and we can make sure all abilities are catered for.
There are many ways you could help besides leading the walks,
such as helping with route planning, risk assessing or taking on
other paperwork that is crucial to the success of the health walks
programme.
