Health trainers are local people who have been trained
to have the skills and knowledge to help people make a real
difference to their health.
The role of a health trainer is to support, encourage and
motivate people to make and maintain health and lifestyle changes
using a one-to-one coaching approach. They will see clients
for an average of six sessions, each an hour long. The number
of sessions per client will vary depending on their needs.
Part of the role of the health trainer is to keep up to date
with what is available locally, as they will signpost clients to
new places and groups, accompanying them if they lack the
confidence to attend by themselves.
The Health Trainer Service is a new NHS initiative, which aims
to tackle local health inequalities by supporting people to make
healthier lifestyle choices and bring those individuals into more
effective contact with mainstream health improvement services.
Health Trainers are working to help achieve several national
targets in the Weston area, including reducing obesity, healthy
eating, increasing physical activity, sensible use of alcohol,
reducing smoking prevalence and improving mental health and
well-being.
