Houses in Multiple Occupation (HMO)

Houses in Multiple Occupancy (HMO) are properties which have been converted into more than one household.

This includes shared houses, bedsits and flats with shared facilities and we work with private sector landlords to improve their quality and safety across North Somerset.

If you are a landlord of this type of residential accommodation you may need a licence from us under HMO licensing laws introduced in 2006.

A licensing scheme was designated across the whole of Weston-super-Mare including Uphill, Kewstoke and Worle and failure to comply with it may result in legal action and a potential £20,000 fine.

New national guidance on fire safety in residential accommodation is now available. The Local Authorities Coordinators of Regulatory Services (LACORS) website has a free Fire Safety Risk Assessment Guide available to download.
