Private rented housing plays an important role within
the North Somerset housing market.
Properties can range from penthouse apartments and detached
homes through to flats, bedsits and Houses in Multiple Occupation
(HMO).
Many people rent these properties because
buying a home is beyond their means and they do not
necessarily qualify for affordable housing.
The properties are owned by private individuals, companies
and organisations and rented out to professionals,
the statutorily homeless and those on very low
incomes.
They depend upon private rented housing to provide them with a
home and we have a responsibility to ensure they are safe
and fit to live in.
As part of this duty we have legal powers at our disposal to
make sure both landlords and tenants behave in the correct
manner so these standards are met.
