You can apply for a disabled facilities grants if you
are disabled or live with a disabled person.
They are available for all types of residential property and can
even pay for essential facilities themselves.
The grants are available for up to £25,000 for all types of
residential property with further information about who is
eligible on our
Eligibility page.
The types of work which the grant will pay for include the
following:
- Adapting heating or lighting controls for disabled use
- Ensuring the safety of a Disabled person and other
occupants - For example, providing a specially adapted room
where it would be safe to leave a Disabled person unattended or
improved lighting to ensure better visibility
- Making it easier to get into and out of a dwelling - For
example, widening doors and installing ramps
- Improving access to a living room
- Improving access and movement around the home to enable a
Disabled person to care for others who live in the property, such
as a spouse, child or other Disabled person
- Providing or improving access to a bedroom, kitchen,
bathroom and shower facilities - For example, installing a
stairlift or providing a downstairs bathroom
- Providing or improving a heating system suitable for a Disabled
person
However, the proposed works must be necessary and appropriate to
meet a Disabled person's needs.
They must also be reasonable and practicable depending on the
age and condition of the property.
We will advise you on these issues and can refuse a grant
if we believe the work involved is not practicable.
Approval must be given before any work can begin and some works
may require planning consent or building regulations approval.
Therefore, you will need to gain advice from a qualified person
when considering any work.
