We are responsible for making decisions on planning
applications and developments within North Somerset.
Our planning officers deal with 85 per cent to
90 per cent of the planning applications we receive under
their delegated powers. Please refer to our scheme of
delegation.
The remaining 10 per cent to 15 per cent is dealt with by
our four area committees and their parent
Planning and Regulatory
(P&R) Committee.
These are made up of elected councillors who meet on a monthly
basis to consider the following applications:
- Where a councillor has requested an application be decided by
committee in accordance with a code of practice
- Where it is recommended permission is granted for an
application contrary to existing planning policy
- On controversial or major applications
- Where a decision would conflict with an objection received
from certain statutory consultee
- Certain council and staff applications
Some applications can be referred upwards to the P&R
Committee by an area committee and occasionally decisions can be
deferred to allow site visits by committee members.
In these cases, decision can be delayed and usually heard at the
next committee meeting.
