Plans to reduce noise

Date: 24 Jul 2008

A number of measures are being taken to reduce the impact from Backwell Recycling Centre on the surrounding area.

Following a meeting between councillors, officers from the council and local residents, a plan is being drawn up to reduce noise on the site at Coles Quarry in liaison with contractors and their site supervisors.

This will include greater care in manoeuvring the skips and ongoing liaison with the local church to ensure their services are not disrupted.

A special acoustic fence is planned to provide a shield for the main bin area, and the acquisition of additional equipment in the form of a roller packer to assist with the movement of bins and the compaction of the rubbish is being considered.

Cllr Carl Francis-Pester, executive member for the environment, said: "I hope these initiatives demonstrate how seriously we have taken the issues raised by local residents.

"Whilst we need to use every opportunity to increase recycling to avoid Government fines, we cannot ignore the welfare of residents around these sites."
